Over the course of an hour Nathan Keep and Cohen exercise their theatrical abilities and pathos to showcase the struggles of 20-somethings grappling with the realities of life as artists in New York City. Determined to make their own way with uncompromising ambitions, our fearless leads hunker down in a single room in attempts to begin this undertaking. A la Beckett’s Waiting For Gadot, the play takes place in a single room with lots of reference to writing a play, though little consensus between the actors on what will actually be done or included. In some ways the play presents itself as a running showcase of the actors abilities; individual monologues, duet songs, stage combat, solos, even ’90s experimental theater. All the while a very self aware conversation frames these vignettes as the actors reveal more about themselves, their relationship, and trepidation with, well, “Doing

the Thing.” The play itself serves as a vehicle for self-actualization, and with the highly autobiographical nature of the content, bridging the gap to the audience’s feelings is comfortable and unforced. The play represents the very thing they spend the entire plot of the performance fighting for, and as a result, the performances by Cohen and Keep are impassioned and genuine, helping to reaffirm the point that “Doing the Thing” is often a self-invented obstacle.
